Wednesdays Words: Follow Your Advice

Following Your Advice

"If you knew someone in your own situation, what advice would you give that person? What course of action, what priorities, what strategies would you suggest?

Think about that, and then think about this. Are you, right now, following your own advice?

It’s easy to know what to do when you’re not the person who has to do it. When you actually have to implement the advice, things get complicated and uncomfortable.

Yet good advice is good advice. And you are well positioned to give yourself good advice.

Yes, it will involve some real work to do what you know must be done. Fortunately, as difficult as it may be, you can absolutely do that work and follow the advice you yourself would offer.

So go ahead, be brutally honest and give yourself the advice you need to hear. Then take it to heart, put it into action, and make the progress you know you can make."

Wednesday's Words: Why You Must

Why You Must

Instead of coming up with reasons why you cannot, come up with reasons why you must. Focus on your purpose, not on your doubts.

Make sure that purpose is authentic, and truly means something to you. If you merely follow someone else’s dream, you won’t like where you end up, even if you somehow manage to get there.

There’s a reason why you care about the things you care about. It’s because you are the person who can give life and meaning and substance to those things.

Admit who you are and what you love. Admit your passions, your interests, your preferences and your desires.

Embrace and celebrate your uniqueness. Feel the driving strength of your most genuine purpose, and let it give energy to everything you do.

Remember always why you must do what you must do. Remember, and find the inspiration to make it happen.

Favorite Oscar Moment

One of our favorite Oscar moment came when Common (Lonnie Lynn) and John Legend (John Stephens) won The Academy Award for 'Best Original Song' for their song 'Glory.'

“The spirit of this bridge connects the kid from the South Side of Chicago, dreaming of a better life, to those in France standing up for their freedom of expression, to those in Hong Kong, protesting for democracy...This bridge was built on hope, welded with compassion and elevated with love for all human beings.” - Common

Wednesday's Words: Empathy

Empathy

You have your own perspective, and it is well-informed and valuable. Yet you do not know it all, and it’s a good idea to avoid the assumption that you do.

Other people may often frustrate and annoy you, and you may wonder how they could be so ignorant, immature, misinformed or whatever. But you only see a very small part of their perspective, and cannot possibly know everything that goes into their decisions.

Being overly judgmental rarely does anyone any good. Look for opportunities to replace judgment with empathy.

By all means, live and act with excellence, and expect excellence from others. When others fail to live up to your expectations, find ways to offer help rather than to cause hurt.

Seek to understand, and to encourage genuine understanding in others. Let go of the need to lecture and to rant, so you can spend more of your precious life in a positive state.

Make connections instead of judgments. And make the best of every situation and of every person you encounter.

Wednesday's Words: Tell Yourself

Tell Yourself

Tell yourself something often enough, and it becomes truth for you. What are you telling yourself over and over again?

If you tell yourself again and again that you can’t do something, you’re never going to do it. Even when you are perfectly able, you can convince yourself you’re absolutely not.

As you look at your world and make your way through it, whatever you’re repeating to yourself will have significant consequences. That can be a big burden, or a grand opportunity.

There’s no benefit in deluding yourself to believe you have superhuman powers. Yet there’s great benefit in constantly reminding yourself of the real and accessible powers you do have.

You can think, you can act, and you can focus your actions toward a specific purpose. You can feel, understand, create, adapt to new situations, build, improve, love and enjoy.

When you think to yourself and talk to yourself, think of all the good you’ve done and all the good you can now do. Remind yourself, again and again, that you can, and you will.

Wednesday's Words: The Sooner You Start

The Sooner You Start

Taking action and doing the difficult work are not what get you down. Delaying, procrastinating and avoiding action are what get you down.

The way forward is to do something positive and useful. Do something, and remind yourself for the ten thousandth time what a joy it is to make a difference.

When you know it must be done, and still you don’t do it, your own disappointment in yourself grows with every passing moment. Put a stop to that disappointment by putting yourself into action.

As difficult and complicated as it may be, the task is never as bad as the avoidance of it. Just start, just keep going, and just get it done.

Enjoy the experience of putting your skills to work. Enjoy the sense of purpose that results from making your time count for something.

Drink in the satisfaction of turning what you must do into what you have done. The sooner you start, the better it will feel.
